Annual conference Nov 6, 2025

After two highly successful editions, the Belgian Hydrogen Council Conference returns for its third edition: a full day of inspiring keynotes, expert discussions and networking opportunities, focused on how the hydrogen ecosystem is taking form in Belgium and across North-West Europe.

Although hydrogen implementation seems to be slowing down – particularly in Europe –the figures tell a different story.

The global hydrogen industry has surpassed 110 Billions USD in committed investments with more than 500 projects  worldwide that have reached investment decision or are under construction. Since 2020, the sector has averaged a 50% year-over-year committed investment growth rate (source : Hydrogen Council’s Global Hydrogen Compass report).

The Hydrogen sector has entered into a next chapter and has moved from ambition to delivery : Hydrogen is recognised as a critical decarbonization solution for hard-to-abate sectors as well as across the broader economy such as transport.

Also in Belgium, important steps forward are being taken : The first pipeline trajectory of the hydrogen ‘backbone’ is being built between Antwerp and Ghent, the first industrial scale electrolyser plant is constructed in Zeebruges. Several port terminals are well advanced with their plans to build storage for green ammonia and crack it into hydrogen. New technology is under development for production and transport of hydrogen, manufacturing capacity is available for the more advanced technologies.

What we have been struggling with in recent years,  namely the lack of users of green hydrogen, is gradually being resolved. The European targets, particularly those for transport, offer a number of opportunities for hydrogen consumption that will accelerate growth of the sector in the coming years. It is now up to the Member States to implement the legislation and thus provide certainty for the sector.

The role of the Belgian Hydrogen Council is to unite and support the full Belgian Hydrogen Value-Chain and connect the Belgian ecosystem with equivalent ecosystems in Europe and North-West Europe in particular.

As Belgian Hydrogen Council, we reach out to policy makers, partner organisations and industry:

  • Our Belgian governments, we ask for swift implementation of European legislation (REDIII-transport) to provide the necessary traction for our industry to pursue their investment plans.
  • Partner organisations in Belgium and our neighbouring countries, we want to invite for exchange of ideas and development of joint positions, to have a stronger voice on the European level.
  • Our industry and research organisations, we encourage to use our BHC platform to help building a strong TEAM BELGIUM that van leverage our Belgian strengths in the market and can create more impact on the international scene.
